CARRYING OUR FAITH INTO OUR WORK

What are some ways that our faith can influence our working? Here are a few ways. Firstly, our faith keeps us grounded when it comes to work. It is easy to make an idol out of our work, particularly the security, power or prestige that we might gain from working. We can come to trust in our own abilities and we find our identity in what we do, our competence or our status. This can have devastating results if, say, we lose or otherwise fail at our jobs, because then we have lost our identity also. A good question toask yourself is, ‘Who am I if I am not what I do?’
The Christian can answer, ‘I am a child of God, loved and accepted by Him.’ If that is where our identity is grounded, then if we suffer failure at work we can be sad yet not crushed, and if we succeed at work we can be glad but not become overbearingly proud. This is how we can stay grounded and not be constantly swayed by our circumstances.

Our work provides us with many opportunities to do good to those around us. Who has God called you to minister to today? Ask God to open your eyes to see someone to talk to, to pray for, or to show love towards. If you would like to explore more of these ideas, you can do so with City to City Asia Pacific’s course for workers, Gospel at Work.
Our work is also a place that fosters spiritual growth. If we pay attention to what God is doing through our work, we can learn to be patient and compassionate with others, who frustrate or annoy us. We may learn not to exercise authority harshly over others, but to oversee them for their benefit. Or, as 1 Peter 2:19 tells us, we might have to bear up with unjust suffering like Christ did, but God sees and commends us.
